Developing rural digital solutions is no longer a matter of science fiction, nor does it require high-tech laboratories. Today, true innovation happens when you use the tools you have at hand to solve the real, everyday problems of your community. If you are between 18 and 35 years old and live in Latin America or the Caribbean, your ingenuity can be recognized and funded.
The countryside is changing at an accelerated pace. Agriculture 4.0 is already here, but we need it to reach those who need it most in order to boost their production and improve their overall quality of life. That is exactly why the Nexus Rural 2026 Award is looking for young, driven leaders just like you.
The call to youth: Agents of transformation in the field
This major initiative is organized by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and PROCASUR, with the core purpose of catalyzing a truly inclusive digital transformation across the entire continent. They know perfectly well that the youth who inhabit these territories are the ones who best understand the problems of their communities, and at the same time, they have a natural ease for adopting and creating technology.
Whether you are using social media creatively to organize the sales of local producers, or your team has created a mobile application from scratch, your project has a highly valuable place in this call for entries.
7 areas where your rural digital solutions make a difference
For your project or idea to participate successfully, it must address a real, tangible challenge. The technical bases of the contest establish seven main areas in which you can frame your proposal. Here we explain each one in detail:
1. Access to financial services We are looking for tools that democratize access to money and credit. For example, if you trained your association to use digital wallets to receive direct and secure payments, or if you created a local microcredit platform, your idea is exactly the type of rural digital solutions we want to boost.
2. Technical advice and constant training Do you use web platforms or a simple WhatsApp bot to send climate alerts to producers on how to combat pests effectively? Anything that allows people to access technical knowledge and improve their daily productive practices counts as a high-impact innovation.
3. Productive improvement and efficiency We are talking about rural digital solutions that significantly reduce operational costs or directly improve production processes. Perfect examples are simple systems that use low-cost soil moisture sensors, or mobile applications that calculate the exact irrigation times to avoid wasting water resources.
4. Climate risk management The current climate is increasingly unpredictable and challenging. If you help your community make decisions based on free weather data or quick SMS alerts to protect against frost, droughts, or storms, your technology literally saves crops and protects months of hard work.

5. Smart associative and business management Local cooperatives and associations need organization to grow. If you adapted free software or designed collaborative cloud spreadsheets so that an association can keep its accounting transparently and efficiently, your project has an enormous scaling potential.
6. Direct commercialization and new markets The main goal is always to bridge the gap and reduce the reliance on intermediaries. If you put together an attractive digital catalog on Instagram or developed a web platform that connects the fresh harvests of your area directly with city restaurants, you are fundamentally transforming access to more profitable and fair markets.

7. Value addition and guaranteed quality This is about rural digital solutions that ensure the quality, food safety, and origin of the products. Imagine implementing simple QR codes on the packaging of local cheese or honey; with a quick scan from a mobile phone, the final buyer knows the whole story of those who produced it, ensuring quality standards and building loyalty with the modern customer.
What do you win by submitting your technological projects?
The Nexus Rural Award will select 10 exceptional young individuals or associative teams. Each winning project will receive direct funding of USD $3,500, which is strategically allocated for investment in equipment, regional outreach activities, and the immediate operational needs of the initiative.
In addition to the financial support, you will access 40 hours of valuable personalized mentoring with experts in the technology sector and an in-person course focused on structuring solid business models. This will give you the fundamental tools to scale your project and take it to the next level.
But that is not all: even if your team does not rank in the top 10, the 80 applicants with the highest scores will have completely free access to a specialized virtual course on Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, and machine learning applied to the agricultural sector.

It’s time to take the step and apply!
The clock is ticking, and the deadline for the call officially closes on July 31, 2026, at 23:59 hrs (Panama time). Do not let doubts hold you back; the simplest technology, if well applied and solving a real problem in the territory, is often the most valuable.
